Mass Airflow Sensor Warning: Air Intake System Problems
Updated: February 2026
The mass airflow (MAF) sensor warning typically appears as a check engine light with diagnostic codes related to the MAF sensor. This critical sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine, allowing the computer to calculate the proper amount of fuel to inject for optimal combustion.
How MAF Sensors Work
The MAF sensor sits in the air intake between the air filter and throttle body. It uses heated elements or hot-wire technology to measure air mass flowing into the engine. The engine computer uses this data along with other sensor inputs to determine precise fuel delivery for all operating conditions.
Symptoms of MAF Sensor Problems
- Check engine light with MAF-related codes (P0100-P0104)
- Hard starting or extended cranking
- Rough or unstable idle
- Hesitation or stumbling during acceleration
- Decreased fuel economy
- Black smoke from exhaust (running too rich)
- Engine stalling at idle or when stopping
Cleaning vs. Replacement
Before replacement, try cleaning the sensor with specialized MAF sensor cleaner (not carburetor cleaner which can damage delicate elements). Remove the sensor, spray cleaning solution on the sensor elements, let dry completely, and reinstall. This resolves many MAF issues caused by oil contamination from over-oiled aftermarket air filters.
Prevention
Use OEM or quality replacement air filters. Avoid over-oiling aftermarket performance filters. Replace air filters on schedule - dirty filters can allow contaminants to reach the MAF sensor.
