Electronic Throttle Control Warning: Drive-by-Wire System Issues

Updated: February 2026

The electronic throttle control (ETC) warning light often appears as a lightning bolt or engine symbol, sometimes with messages like "REDUCED ENGINE POWER." Modern vehicles use electronic throttle control instead of mechanical cables, and this warning indicates a problem with that system.

How Electronic Throttle Works

When you press the accelerator pedal, position sensors send signals to the engine computer, which commands the throttle body to open accordingly. There's no physical cable connection. The system integrates with traction control, stability control, and cruise control for optimized performance and safety.

Common Causes

  • Dirty or carbon-fouled throttle body
  • Accelerator pedal position sensor failure
  • Throttle position sensor problems
  • Electrical connection issues or corrosion
  • Throttle body motor failure
  • Engine computer software glitches
  • Low battery voltage affecting sensors

Symptoms and Driving Ability

The vehicle typically enters "limp mode" with severely reduced power to prevent damage. Maximum speed may be limited to 20-45 mph. Acceleration is greatly restricted. Sometimes the vehicle won't accelerate above idle. The vehicle remains drivable to reach service but is unsafe for normal driving.

What to Do

Pull over safely and turn off the engine for 30 seconds to reset the system. If the light returns, have the vehicle towed or drive very carefully to a nearby shop. Throttle body cleaning resolves many issues. Sensor or throttle body replacement may be needed for persistent problems.
