Security System Warning Light: Immobilizer and Theft Deterrent

Updated: February 2026

The security system warning light (showing a car with a lock, key symbol, or "SECURITY") indicates the status of your vehicle's anti-theft immobilizer system. This system prevents the engine from starting unless it recognizes an authorized key, protecting against theft.

Normal vs. Problem Indication

Flashing slowly when vehicle is off: Normal operation - the system is armed and monitoring. This actually indicates everything is working correctly. Solid light when trying to start: Problem - the system doesn't recognize your key and is preventing engine start. You'll typically hear the starter crank but the engine won't fire.

Why the Engine Won't Start

  • Using a non-programmed or wrong key
  • Key transponder chip damage or battery failure (keyless systems)
  • Interference from other electronic devices or aftermarket immobilizers
  • Immobilizer module failure
  • Previous battery disconnect requiring relearn procedure
  • Damaged ignition cylinder antenna

Troubleshooting Steps

Try your spare key if available. Ensure you're using the correct key (valet keys may not start the car). Replace the key fob battery in keyless systems. Turn the key to "on" position and wait 10-15 minutes, then try starting again (allows relearn). Remove metal objects and other keys from the key ring. If the problem persists, the vehicle may need towing to a dealer for key programming or immobilizer diagnosis.
