Power Steering Warning Light: Loss of Steering Assistance

Updated: February 2026

The power steering warning light (usually a steering wheel icon, sometimes with an exclamation point) illuminates when there's a problem with your vehicle's power steering system. This can mean hydraulic power steering fluid is low or the electric power steering system has malfunctioned.

What Happens When It Fails

Power steering makes turning the wheel easy, especially at low speeds or when parking. When the system fails, steering becomes extremely heavy and requires significant physical effort. While the vehicle remains steerable, maneuvering becomes difficult and tiring, particularly for smaller drivers or in emergency situations requiring quick steering inputs.

Immediate Safety Steps

  • The vehicle is still drivable but steering requires much more effort
  • Slow down and avoid aggressive maneuvers
  • Be prepared for heavy steering, especially when parking or turning
  • Drive directly to a safe location or repair shop
  • Avoid highway driving if possible - slower speeds are safer
  • Use both hands on the wheel and anticipate turns earlier

Common Causes

For hydraulic systems: low power steering fluid, broken drive belt, leaking hoses, or failed power steering pump. For electric systems: faulty steering motor, sensor problems, or electrical issues. Modern vehicles with electric power steering may show additional warning messages on the dashboard display describing the specific problem.
