Lane Departure Warning Light: Driver Assistance System Alert

Updated: February 2026

The lane departure warning light shows a vehicle between lane markings and illuminates in modern vehicles equipped with lane keeping assist technology. This driver assistance feature uses cameras to monitor lane markings and alerts you if the vehicle begins drifting without signaling.

How the System Works

A forward-facing camera monitors road lane markings. When the system detects the vehicle crossing lane lines without the turn signal activated, it provides warnings through visual alerts, steering wheel vibration, or audible beeps. Some systems (lane keeping assist) actively steer the vehicle back toward lane center.

What Different Light Behaviors Mean

  • Green or white steady: System is active and monitoring
  • Amber/yellow steady: System malfunction or unavailable
  • Flashing with warning: Vehicle is departing lane without signaling

Common Reasons System Disables

Heavy rain, snow, or fog obscuring lane markings; dirty or obstructed camera lens; faded or absent lane lines on older roads; construction zones with confusing markings; or tight curves. The system automatically disables in these conditions and re-enables when conditions improve.

If Constantly Unavailable

Clean the camera lens area (typically behind the rearview mirror). If the light remains amber, calibration may be needed after windshield replacement, or there may be a camera or module fault. Have the system diagnosed at a dealer familiar with driver assistance technology.
