Catalytic Converter Warning: Emissions System Overheating

Updated: February 2026

Some modern vehicles have a specific catalytic converter warning light or message indicating the catalytic converter is overheating beyond safe limits. This component costs $1,000-$2,500 to replace, so immediate action prevents expensive damage.

What the Catalytic Converter Does

The catalytic converter uses precious metals to convert harmful exhaust gases (carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides) into less harmful emissions (carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrogen). It operates at extremely high temperatures (up to 1,200°F) during normal use but can be damaged by excessive heat or contaminants.

Causes of Overheating

  • Engine misfires sending unburned fuel into the exhaust
  • Rich fuel mixture providing excess fuel
  • Leaking fuel injectors
  • Ignition system problems
  • Exhaust system restrictions causing backpressure
  • Using leaded fuel (if accidentally available)
  • Oil or coolant entering combustion chambers

Emergency Response

Pull over immediately in a safe location away from dry grass or flammable materials - an overheated catalytic converter can ignite nearby combustibles. Turn off the engine and let it cool completely (30+ minutes). Do not park in a garage until the vehicle has cooled outdoors. Have the vehicle towed to prevent further damage. Driving with a glowing-hot catalytic converter can cause complete failure, exhaust system fires, or damage to surrounding components.
