Secondary Air Injection Warning: Emissions System Problems

The secondary air injection (AIR) system warning appears as a check engine light with AIR system codes (P0410-P0449). This emissions system pumps fresh air into the exhaust manifolds during cold starts to reduce hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions until the catalytic converter reaches operating temperature.

How the System Works

When you start a cold engine, the AIR pump (electric or belt-driven) delivers fresh air to the exhaust manifolds through check valves. This extra oxygen helps burn remaining fuel in the exhaust, reducing emissions during the high-pollution cold-start period. Once the engine and catalytic converter warm up (typically 1-2 minutes), the system shuts off.

Common AIR System Problems

  • Failed AIR pump motor or seized pump
  • Stuck or leaking diverter valve
  • Failed check valves allowing exhaust backflow
  • Disconnected or cracked AIR hoses
  • Electrical problems with pump relay or wiring
  • Carbon buildup clogging passages

Symptoms and Drivability

The system only operates during cold starts for brief periods. Problems typically don't affect drivability - you won't notice any performance issues. The check engine light is often the only symptom. Some systems make noise during operation; unusual loud noises may indicate pump problems.

Is Repair Urgent?

AIR system problems don't affect vehicle operation but will cause failed emissions tests in states requiring them. Repair is not urgent for vehicle function but is necessary to pass inspection. Pump replacement costs $400-$800. In some cases, hose repairs or check valve replacement suffices at lower cost. Some states allow exemptions for expensive emissions repairs.
