The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) or Electronic Stability Control (ESC) warning light shows a car with wavy skid marks. This advanced safety system helps prevent loss of control by detecting and reducing skids, and the light indicates either system activation or a malfunction.
How ESP/ESC Works
The system monitors steering angle, vehicle rotation, and individual wheel speeds. When it detects the vehicle isn't following the intended path (understeer or oversteer), it automatically applies brakes to specific wheels and reduces engine power to help stabilize the vehicle and prevent spinning or sliding off the road.
Understanding the Light Behavior
- Flashing: System is actively working to prevent a skid - normal operation
- Solid/Constant: System malfunction - ESP is disabled
- Flashing with beep: Vehicle approaching limits of traction
What to Do
If the light flashes briefly during acceleration or cornering on slippery surfaces, this is normal - ease off the accelerator and straighten steering. If the light stays on constantly, the system has a fault. Check if you accidentally pressed the ESP off button. If not, have the system diagnosed. Common causes include wheel speed sensor failures, steering angle sensor issues, or brake system problems.
You can drive with ESP disabled, but exercise extreme caution in wet or icy conditions. The vehicle is more prone to skids without this electronic safety net.
