Traction Control Warning Light: What It Means and How to Respond

Updated: February 2026

The traction control light shows a car with wavy lines beneath it. This light can illuminate in two different scenarios: temporarily when the system is actively working to prevent wheel slip, or constantly when there's a malfunction in the traction control system.

Normal vs. Problem Indication

If the light blinks or flashes briefly while driving on slippery surfaces, this is normal operation. The system is detecting wheel slip and reducing engine power or applying brakes to specific wheels to maintain traction. Once traction is restored, the light turns off.

If the light remains constantly illuminated , it indicates a system malfunction. The traction control may be disabled, leaving you without this safety feature.

What to Do

  • If blinking during acceleration on slippery roads, ease off the accelerator
  • Allow the system to work by avoiding aggressive throttle inputs
  • If constantly on, check if you accidentally pressed the traction control off button
  • Look for a separate button (often near the shifter) and press to re-enable
  • If still on after re-enabling, have the system diagnosed
  • Common causes include wheel speed sensor issues or low battery voltage

Safe Driving Without Traction Control

Your vehicle remains drivable with traction control disabled, but exercise extra caution in rain, snow, or on loose surfaces. Reduce speed and avoid sudden acceleration or sharp turns.
