Parking Brake Engaged Warning: Release Brake Before Driving

Updated: February 2026

The parking brake engaged warning (often the same light as the brake system warning, showing "BRAKE" or exclamation point) illuminates when your parking brake is applied. This reminds you to release it before driving, as driving with the parking brake engaged causes rapid wear and potential brake system damage.

What Happens If You Drive With It On

The parking brake typically acts on the rear wheels. Driving with it engaged causes: rapid rear brake pad or shoe wear, overheated rear brake components, brake fluid boiling, warped rear brake drums or rotors, possible brake failure, and a distinct burning smell. Even short distances can cause expensive damage.

Release Procedures by Type

  • Foot pedal parking brake: Press pedal firmly and it should release with a click
  • Hand lever brake: Pull up slightly and press button, then lower lever fully
  • Electronic parking brake: Press the button (usually near shifter) or shift into drive
  • Stick shift: Some require clutch depressed and brake released before shifting

When Light Stays On After Release

If the light remains on after fully releasing the parking brake, this indicates a brake system problem, not parking brake engagement. Possible causes: low brake fluid level, brake fluid level sensor failure, parking brake not fully releasing (cable adjustment needed), or brake system hydraulic problems. Do not ignore this - it indicates a potential brake safety issue.

Partially Engaged Brake

Sometimes parking brakes don't fully release due to corroded cables, frozen cables in winter, or adjustment problems. The light stays on and you feel resistance when accelerating. Pull over, reapply the parking brake firmly, then release it again. If still stuck, have it inspected - continuing to drive can cause brake damage and potential failure.
