Low Coolant Warning Light: Prevent Overheating and Damage

Updated: February 2026

The low coolant warning light (often showing a thermometer in liquid or "LOW COOLANT") indicates the coolant level in the radiator or overflow reservoir has dropped below the safe minimum. This early warning helps you address the problem before engine overheating causes serious damage.

Why Coolant Level Drops

Coolant doesn't just evaporate under normal conditions. Level drops indicate: leaks from hoses, radiator, water pump, heater core, or gaskets; head gasket failure allowing coolant into cylinders; or rarely, just normal consumption on some vehicles requiring occasional top-off. Sudden coolant loss suggests a significant leak requiring immediate investigation.

Immediate Actions

  • Pull over safely at the next opportunity
  • Turn off the engine and let it cool (15-30 minutes)
  • Check coolant level in overflow reservoir (never open radiator cap while hot)
  • Look under the vehicle for coolant puddles or drips
  • Check under the dashboard for coolant smell or dampness (heater core leak)
  • Add coolant to the overflow reservoir if safe to do so
  • Use 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water, or premixed coolant

Finding Leaks

Fresh coolant is typically bright green, orange, or pink (depends on type). Look for colored residue or stains on hoses, radiator, engine block, or under the vehicle. White smoke from exhaust with sweet smell suggests head gasket failure (coolant entering combustion chambers). Coolant in engine oil makes oil look milky - check dipstick.

When to Drive vs. Tow

If you can add coolant and the level stays stable, drive carefully to a repair shop while monitoring temperature. If coolant continues dropping or you see active leaking, have the vehicle towed.
