Whirlpool F3 Error Code: Temperature Sensor Issue

Updated: February 2026

The Whirlpool F3 error code indicates your washing machine's water temperature sensor (thermistor) is malfunctioning or providing readings outside the acceptable range. The thermistor is essential for temperature-controlled cycles, and when it fails, the washer cannot properly heat water or ensure safe temperature limits.

How the Thermistor Works

The thermistor is a temperature-sensitive resistor that changes electrical resistance as water temperature changes. The control board monitors this resistance to determine water temperature and control the heating element. When resistance values are out of range, incorrect, or inconsistent, the F3 error appears.

Initial Troubleshooting

  • Unplug the washer for 10 minutes to reset the control board
  • Verify your home's hot water supply is working by running a hot faucet
  • Plug the washer back in and try a cold water cycle (doesn't require heating)
  • If cold cycle works but warm/hot cycles trigger F3, the thermistor circuit has issues

Testing Water Supply Temperature

Start a hot wash cycle and after 5 minutes, pause and open the door. Feel the water - it should be noticeably warm or hot. If water is cold, either hot water isn't reaching the washer or the thermistor isn't triggering the heating element properly.

Thermistor Testing

The thermistor can be tested with a multimeter by measuring its resistance at different temperatures. Typical thermistors show around 50,000-60,000 ohms at room temperature and decrease to around 1,200-1,500 ohms at hot temperatures. If readings don't change with temperature or are completely out of range, the thermistor has failed.

Replacement Process

The thermistor is usually located near the heating element at the bottom of the tub or on the inlet manifold. Accessing it requires removing panels and disconnecting electrical connections. While technically DIY-capable, many homeowners prefer professional service for thermistor replacement to ensure correct diagnosis and proper installation without damaging the new part or surrounding components.
