Get Red Wine Out of Carpet Fibers

Updated: February 2026

Red wine on carpet creates panic, but quick action with the right methods can completely remove the stain. Carpet fibers trap wine deeply, so treatment must both lift and absorb the pigments.

Immediate Blotting Critical

Blot immediately with white paper towels or cloth. Press down firmly to absorb wine from the carpet fibers—never rub, as this pushes wine deeper and spreads the stain. Continue blotting with fresh towels until no more wine transfers.

Salt Absorption Method

  • Cover the damp wine stain completely with table salt
  • The salt will turn pink as it absorbs the wine
  • Let it sit for at least 10 minutes
  • Vacuum up the salt once it's fully absorbed the moisture
  • This prevents wine from setting deep in carpet backing

Club Soda Treatment

Pour club soda directly onto the wine stain after blotting. The carbonation helps lift wine from carpet fibers. Blot again with fresh towels , letting the club soda bubble up the wine. Repeat this process 2-3 times for best results.

Baking Soda Paste Power

Mix 3 parts baking soda with 1 part water to create a thick paste. Apply this generously to any remaining stain and let it dry completely (several hours or overnight). The baking soda draws out wine pigments as it dries. Vacuum thoroughly once dry.

Hydrogen Peroxide for Light Carpets

For white or light-colored carpets, mix 2 parts hydrogen peroxide with 1 part dish soap . Apply to the stain, let it sit for 20 minutes, then blot. Test in an inconspicuous area first to ensure it won't bleach carpet color.
