Remove Oil Stains from Linen Clothing

Updated: February 2026

Linen is highly absorbent, so oil penetrates quickly and deeply into its natural fibers. However, linen is also durable and can withstand vigorous stain treatment, making removal achievable with the right approach.

Cornstarch Absorption First

Before using any liquid cleaners, absorb as much oil as possible with cornstarch . Sprinkle a thick layer over the stain immediately. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes—overnight for old stains. The cornstarch draws oil from deep within the linen fibers.

Dish Soap Power Treatment

  • Brush off the cornstarch gently
  • Apply concentrated liquid dish soap to the dry stain
  • Work it into the fabric with your fingers or a soft brush
  • Create a good lather and let it penetrate for 15 minutes
  • Dish soap is designed to break down grease effectively

Baking Soda Paste Scrub

Mix baking soda with just enough water to form a paste. Apply this over the dish soap and scrub gently with an old toothbrush. The mild abrasive action helps lift oil that's embedded in linen's textured weave.

Hot Water Rinse

Linen can handle hot water, which helps dissolve and flush out oil. Rinse the treated area with the hottest water the fabric can tolerate (check care label). The heat opens the fibers and releases trapped grease.

Machine Wash

Wash the linen item in hot water with a strong detergent. Add half a cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle—vinegar cuts through any remaining grease residue. Always check the stain before drying, as heat can set stubborn oil stains permanently in linen's porous fibers.
