Remove Oil Stains from Fleece Jackets

Updated: February 2026

Fleece is synthetic polyester with a napped surface that traps oil in its pile structure. However, synthetic fibers don't absorb oil as deeply as natural fabrics, making removal effective with proper treatment.

Cornstarch Pre-Treatment

Apply cornstarch immediately to fresh oil stains on fleece. Work it into the pile with your fingers and let it sit for 30 minutes minimum. The powder absorbs surface oil before you introduce any liquids that might spread the stain.

Brush Out Powder

  • Gently brush away the cornstarch
  • Use a soft brush to avoid damaging fleece pile
  • The powder will have darkened from absorbed oil
  • Repeat application if needed
  • Multiple treatments work for set-in stains

Dish Soap Direct Application

Apply concentrated liquid dish soap to the oil stain. Work it into the fleece with your fingers , ensuring it penetrates the pile. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Dish soap is designed to cut grease and works excellently on synthetic fibers.

Hot Water Rinse

Fleece can handle warm to hot water (check care label). Rinse the soaped area with hot water , which helps dissolve and flush out oil that the soap has broken down. The heat opens synthetic fibers and releases trapped grease.

Machine Wash

Wash the fleece jacket in warm water with regular detergent. Add half a cup of white vinegar to cut through remaining grease. Avoid fabric softener on fleece—it coats fibers and makes the fabric less effective at insulation. Air-dry or use low heat, checking the stain before full drying.
