Remove Cooking Oil from Cotton Shirts

Updated: February 2026

Cooking oil on cotton shirts is a common kitchen mishap, but cotton's absorbent nature makes prompt treatment critical. The grease penetrates quickly, requiring both absorption and dissolution techniques.

Paper Towel Immediate Blotting

Blot excess oil immediately with paper towels. Place towels under and over the fabric, pressing firmly to absorb surface oil before it spreads. Don't rub—this pushes oil deeper into cotton fibers.

Baking Soda Absorption

  • Cover the oil stain completely with baking soda
  • Press it gently into the fabric with your fingers
  • Let it sit for 20-30 minutes
  • The powder will darken as it absorbs oil
  • Brush away the baking soda

Dish Soap Pre-Treatment

Apply concentrated liquid dish soap directly to the oil stain on dry fabric. Work it in thoroughly with your fingers , creating a lather. Dish soap is formulated to break down cooking grease—let it penetrate for 15 minutes before rinsing.

Hot Water Rinse

Rinse the treated area with the hottest water safe for the cotton shirt (check care label). Hot water helps dissolve and flush out oil that dish soap has broken down. Rinse from the back of the fabric to push oil out.

Vinegar Boost Wash

Machine wash in hot water with regular detergent plus half a cup of white vinegar. The vinegar cuts through any remaining grease residue. Add an extra rinse cycle to ensure all soap is removed. Check the stain before drying—heat sets oil permanently in cotton.
