Remove Oil Stains from Acrylic Sweaters

Updated: February 2026

Acrylic sweaters are synthetic and resist oil absorption better than natural fibers, making stain removal more effective. However, proper treatment ensures oil doesn't set into the knit structure.

Cornstarch Pre-Treatment

Apply cornstarch immediately to fresh oil stains on acrylic. Press it gently into the knit fabric and let it sit for 30 minutes minimum. The powder absorbs surface oil before you introduce liquids that might spread the stain.

Gentle Powder Removal

  • Brush away cornstarch with a soft brush
  • Be gentle to avoid stretching knit fabric
  • The powder will have darkened from absorbed oil
  • Repeat application if stain remains oily to touch
  • Multiple treatments work well on acrylic

Dish Soap Direct Application

Apply concentrated liquid dish soap to the oil stain. Work it into the acrylic knit gently with your fingers , avoiding aggressive scrubbing that could stretch the sweater. Let it sit for 15 minutes—dish soap breaks down grease effectively on synthetic fibers.

Warm Water Hand Wash

Acrylic can handle warm water. Hand wash the affected area with warm water to rinse out the oil and soap. Warm temperature helps dissolve oil that the dish soap has broken down. Squeeze gently—never wring acrylic knits.

Machine Wash Gentle Cycle

Wash the acrylic sweater in warm water on a gentle cycle with regular detergent. Add half a cup of white vinegar to cut any remaining grease. Lay flat to dry —never hang acrylic sweaters while wet, as they'll stretch. Check the stain before fully drying and repeat treatment if needed.
